The main responsibility of an auto mechanic is repair problems that are present in the vehicles. He receives service calls from customers whose cars have broken down in the middle of the road. He has to take the service truck and go to the location where the customer's car has halted. He is supposed to first discuss with the customer regarding the problem, examine and determine the actual cause, and try to fix the problem then and there itself. If the problem is a major one and cannot be repaired on the spot, he has to bring the truck with the customer's vehicle toed behind it to the garage.
An auto mechanic necessarily has to possess high levels of technical abilities to be used in diagnosing the root cause of the problems found in vehicles. He has to discuss all the problems with the vehicle or car owner and estimate the charges for fixing them. An auto mechanic has to work with advanced tools and equipments for the car repair jobs. He may even have to use computerized systems for fixing the problems.
Along with the repairing of malfunctioning vehicles, handling periodical servicing of the cars is also one of the important auto mechanic duties and responsibilities. He has to work on cars which customers get for servicing and maintenance check. This task includes everything such as engine oil changing, tuning the engine, refilling all fluids, examining belts and hoses, brake setting, and other tasks. After he is done with the servicing, he takes a test drive to make sure all problems are fixed and to find out any more problems.
